Abstract

A hair nourishing and restoring composition comprises the compound swertiamarin (obtainable from the plant Swertia japonika Makino) dissolved or dispersed in a cosmetic base which is an ointment, pomade, cream, oil-in-water emulsion or an aqueous alcohol. There may also be present the compounds swertianolin, erythrocentaurin, swertianol and gentianin which may be obtained from the same source. Other substances known to promote hair growth, e.g. ethinyl-estradiol, tincture of capsicum, chondroitin sulphuric acid, calcium pantothenate, cepharantine, photo - sensitive pigments, kinokitiol and recitin may also be added. The Specification describes a process for obtaining an extract from the above plant suitable for use in preparing the compositions of the invention by extraction of the plant (fresh or dried) with ethanol and dilution of the extract with water followed by purification steps to remove saponin, tannic acid and proteinaceous impurities.
