Abstract

936,164. Ventilating. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Jan. 30, 1962 [March 2, 1961], No. 7725/61. Class 137. In a ventilating system comprising a plurality of enclosures arranged in groups, and an air-conditioning unit individual to each group, each unit being arranged to deliver a constant volume of air and having its input connected with sources of air to be conditioned, the delivery of air to each unit from one source is selectively controlled through a common control device in accordance with the requirements of the individual groups. The invention is applied to a ship and is aimed at reducing the load on the air-conditioning plant at times when cabins and other enclosures are likely to be unoccupied. As shown, a group of enclosures 1, 2, 3 receive air through reheaters 4 from a conditioning unit 5 which includes means for controlling both the humidity and temperature of the air supplied at a constant rate by a fan 9. Fresh air and return air are supplied to the unit from sources 7, 8, respectively and the delivery of the fresh air is controlled by a damper 10. The position of this damper is controlled by an electric timer which actuates valve 12 to allow compressed air from a source 13 to pass to damper-operating pneumatic motor 11. The timer similarly actuates valves 12a, 12b at predetermined times to control the air supply to other groups of enclosures. In a modification, the motor 11 operates a damper in a recirculating duct which returns a proportion of air from the output directly to the input of the conditioning unit. Other modifications are referred to, e.g. the timer 14 may be replaced by a manual control device.
