935,879. Blasting. BELL INTERCONTINENTAL CORPORATION. Nov. 8, 1961 [Nov. 29, 1960], No. 39949/61. Class 60. [Also in Group XXVI] A blast finishing machine includes a casing having a workpiece reception opening, a blasting media projecting machine discharging magnetizable media into the interior of said casing, and a curtain of flexible magnetized members traversing said opening and projecting a magnetic field across the opening, whereby flying blast media will become entrained by said magnetic field and agglomerate on said flexible members to form a wall of media particles clinging together in such manner as to close said opening against passage therethrough of other projectile media particles while permitting penetration and/or withdrawal of workpieces therethrough. A shot-blasting machine has a centrifugal throwing wheel 12 mounted at the top of a housing 10. Spent blastant collects in a trough 19 at the bottom of the housing and is returned to the wheel by a screw conveyer 20, elevator 18, shoot 16 and hopper 14. The housing has at each end a vestibule for the passage of a workpiece 24 supported on rollers 34; a conveyer may be used. Coiled steel springs 26 are anchored at their root ends in sill plates 28 carried by top and bottom non-magnetic steel elements 30. Non-magnetic side plates 31 are provided. The springs are magnetized by permanent bar magnets 36, 38 capped by metal polepieces 40. Vertical polepieces 42 are insulated from the frame by wooden spacers 43. In a modification, the springs extend horizontally from the opposite sides of the apertures. In further modifications, the springs are filled with plastic magnetic material or contain magnetized marbles of metal or ceramic. In another modification, brushes 60 comprise bristles of magnetizable spring steel rooted in clamps 62 carried in channels 64 spaced apart by steel bars 66. Permanent magnets 70, 72, 74, top and bottom polepieces 76, 78, side pole plates 80, and insulation plates 82 are provided. Shot clinging to the workpiece is removed by nylon brushes 86.
