Abstract

<PICT:0935803/IV(a)/1> In bonding together the organic fibres of a stereoreticulate mass in the manufacture of cleaning and polishing pads, a web or mat of fibres having the required thickness and density is prepared and passed on a conveyer belt 20 through a spraying zone 23 and sprayed with liquid elastomer. With webs of 3/4 to 2 inches thick the best penetration is obtained by spraying the web once on each side. The spray head 24, preferably of the oscillating type, supplies sufficient elastomer to penetrate the upper half of the web, which then passes through a drying zone 25 where the elastomer is dried to an indispersible but unvulcanized condition. The web is then inverted by an inverter 27 and the other side sprayed by a similar spray head 29 after which the elastomer is cured in the oven 31.
