Abstract

A coated metal electrode for electric arc-welding wherein the coating contains organic substances at least partly, if not exclusively, in the form of leaf particles. Leaves of clover, eucalyptus, laurel and mint may be used and in general the leaves of aromatic plants excepting those containing mainly phenols are suitable. It is preferable only to use that part of a leaf intermediate the ribs, said ribs being removed by maceration; alternatively, if the whole of the leaf is used it should have few ribs., e.g. clover-leaf. The leaves are used in the form of particles for uniform distribution in the coating mass and should pass through a 50 mesh screen; the dried leaves may be ground or chopped. Examples refer to coatings containing 30% of leaf material. Mint leaves replacing ordinary cellulose in the electrode coatings are said to considerably increase the stability of the arc when the coating is humidified by exposure to the air.
