Abstract

935,661. Automatic voltage control. NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION Inc. Jan. 10, 1961, No. 995/61. Class 38 (4). A voltage regulator, particularly for supplying the collector voltage to series transistor regulators, is provided with circuitry to reduce the effects of transients appearing in the primary supply voltage. As shown, a load 11 is fed over a series regulator 15 from a primary supply 10, the regulator being connected to the supply 10 through a circuit comprising output terminals 23, 28 and a transformer 12 having a secondary winding 14 with a high voltage tap 16 and a low voltage tap 17 ; tap 16 is connected to terminal 23 over a rectifying diode 18 and a series transistor 21; tap 17 is connected to terminal 23 over a rectifying diode 19. Smoothing capacitors 26, 27 and a reference voltage source 24 connected between terminal 28 and the base of transistor 21 are also provided. The circuit parameters are so chosen that at steady and high transient line conditions diode 19 is conducting whereby transistor 21 is biased to cut-off and power is supplied to terminal 23 direct from tap 17. For low transient line conditions diode 19 is reversebiased and transistor 21 is biased to conduction, power being supplied to terminal 23 over transistor 21 which functions as a series regulator. Diode 19 thus serves as a switch for the voltage taps 16 and 17 which are never simultaneously connected to the terminal 23. It is stated that inherent voltage variations caused by high and low transients in the primary supply and within the range of, for example, 15 v. to 25 v. may be reduced to variations within 15v. to 20 v. by using the regulator, so the series regulator 15 may be designed for a maximum voltage of 20 v. instead of 25 v. A three-phase embodiment is also described (Fig. 3, not shown).
