Abstract

935,620. Air cushion vehicles. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT Ltd. Jan. 15, 1962 [Oct. 25, 1960], No. 36528/60. Class 4. An air cushion vehicle 1 has air intakes 2 housing fans 32 supplying air through ducts 4 to peripheral-jet ducts formed longitudinally in sidewalls 7 and transversely at the ends of the vehicle. The front transverse duet shown in Fig. 3 is formed by outer and inner walls 8 and 9 and these are extended downwardly and inwardly by flexible members 10 and 11 respectively tied together to form a nozzle 12 for the transverse portion of the peripheral jet. The member 11 is attached to, or formed integrally with, one or a plurality of separate inflatable bags or compartments 13 tied to the base 6 of the vehicle by diaphragms 15 and inflated through conduits 14. Vent holes 16 and drain holes 17 are provided in the diaphragms. The transverse members are arranged to seal the gap at the front between the sidewalls, and both members may be of inflatable construction. The gap at the rear end of the sidewalls is sealed in a similar manner, and constructions are described, for a vehicle having two peripheral jets around the cushion, and in all embodiments the members, by their flexibility, are capable of being deflected upwards by waves or obstacles which the vehicle encounters. Constructions are described also for inflatable extensions to stabilising jet ducts.
