Abstract

929,671. Air cushion vehicles. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT Ltd. Oct. 30, 1961 [Nov. 1, 1960], No. 37421/60. Class 4. A ground effect vehicle is provided with a flexible jet-nozzle system through which air under pressure is discharged downwardly to build up, maintain and/or vary the air pressure of the ground effect air cushion or portions thereof, the system forming also a flexible barrier or barriers to the dissipation of pressurised air constituting the ground effect cushion or portions thereof associated with the barriers, and being composed of an assembly of flexible tubular components arranged in side-by-side relationship to depend downwardly from the base of the vehicle. Air is supplied from an annular duct 19 to a plurality of discrete outlets 7 each connected by a sleeve 10 to a flexible tube 11. The sleeves 10 may form a peripherally continuous manifold as shown in Fig. 5 and the flexible tubes are arranged so that when inflated they abut to form an effectively continuous skirt. The peripheral duct so formed is constrained from outward movement by a flexible annular diaphragm 13 formed with air and water vents 15 and 16 respectively. At the trailing edge of the vehicle the diaphragm 13 may be replaced by elastic members. The flexible tubes may be inclined to provide a propulsive component of thrust from the peripheral jet.
