Abstract

[Also in Group XIII] In a boiler suitable for use in hot water and central heating systems, water to be heated flows through a flat-sectioned heat-exchange chamber 1 provided with vertical fins 2 via inlet and outlet pipes 4, the chamber with its fins being surrounded by an inner casing 7, open at top and bottom, which is itself surrounded and supported by an outer casing 10 mounted on a suitable base and having a top cover 12. The unfinned side walls of the chamber 1 extend through the casing 7, said walls being thicker than the other walls and being bolted to the outer casing by studs 6. The inner casing 7 extends below the heat-exchanger to surround a space 9 in which a burner (not shown) is mounted. Heated gases rising from the latter pass up through the spaces 8 between the fins and out through a flue pipe 13. Convection currents in the space 11 between the two casings help to keep the outer casing cool and to dilute the combustion products passing out through the flue pipe. The top plate 12 is preferably detachable and has removable rings or plates on which kettles or the like may be placed.
