Abstract

934,896. Boots &c. TRIMFOOT CO. May 1, 1961, No. 15690/61. Classes 17 (1) and 17 (2). A shoe has an outsole and insole, a counter, and a reinforcement member for the counter and secured to the counter along part of an inverted arcuate line so as to form a downwardly open pocket to receive a counter stiffener whose lower marginal edge portion is free of attachment to the soles. The reinforcement member can be inside or outside the counter. The reinforcement member 13 (Fig. 1) for a child's boot includes a top band portion 14 and optionally an interconnecting portion 15. The quarter is first stitched to the band 14 along the line 17, and then, after moistening or mulling, the two members are put between heated moulds (Fig. 3, not shown), the upright centre section of which is the shape of an ogee curve. Side facings 20 are now stitched to the quarter and the member 13 stitched to the quarter along line 18 forming the pocket for the counter stiffener which is now inserted. When the rear quarter unit is applied to the last, tabs 24, 27 on the inner member are turned in over, and cemented to, the insole while the lower margin of the outer member is wiped outwardly and the outsole and welt attached by stitching or cement. The above mulling and shaping step may be replaced by cutting and shaping the quarter and reinforcement member in two parts and stitching the parts together to form a vertical seam at the back of the shoe. The Oxford type low quarter shoe is formed in this way with the counter stiffener pocket extending to the top of the shoe.
