Abstract
<PICT:0934625/III/1> In the removal of iron and/or manganese from water by treatment with ozone followed by filtration through activated charcoal, with subsequent back-washing to recover iron and manganese oxides, according to the parent Specification the two layers of carbon in the filter 7 of the parent case are separated and each is supported on an orifice plate 15; the upper layer 81 is coarser-grained than the lower, 811. Unfiltered water entering at 6 is distributed by a funnel 22 over the upper layer, (see the right hand side of the Figure). The first-filtered water passes through the orifices 151 of the upper orificed plate 15 on to the lower filter layer and leaves the vessel at 14. For backflushing the upper layer (see the left hand side of the Figure), water is admitted through a pipe 17 to a funnel 23, rises therefrom through the layer, flows inwards over the edge of funnel 22, and is discharged from the bottom of it at 20. Air may be admitted from the upper end of a pipe 19. For backflushing the lower layer, water is admitted at 18, flows in a manner corresponding to that described above, and is discharged from funnel 23 at 21. An intermediate air pipe 19 also is provided.
