Abstract
934,604. Stuffing-box substitutes. UNITED GAS INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 18, 1960 [March 11, 1959], No. 8324/59. Class 122 (5). A spindle gland 1 for the diaphragm-operated gas valve of a water heater has a bore 3 recessed at its inner end to receive at least one O-ring gasket or U-shaped packing ring 5 open to the inner end of the gland and is provided with at least one 0-ring gasket 8 between the gland 1 and a cylindrical or coned housing. The 0-ring 8 may be seated in a groove 7 in the gland body 1 or in a groove in the housing and the ungrooved surface tapered slightly so that increasing pressure is exerted on the ring 8 as the gland is inserted. More than one groove 7 may be provided around the gland and each may receive one or more packing rings 5. The packing ring 5 may be retained in the recess by an end-plate secured to the inner end of the gland and one or more sealing washers may be clamped between the inner end of the gland and a corresponding surface of the housing. The gland may be screwed into the housing or retained in it by screws passing through one or more lugs on the gland. The spindle 2 of the gland may be of square or non-circular crosssection and the bore of the gland and/or the packing rings or gaskets may be correspondingly formed.
