In a refrigerator having an evaporator 3 in a storage compartment, a thermal element 7 in the compartment or 15 on the evaporator serving to cycle the compressor, a spongy absorbent mass 8 in contact with the evaporator is saturated with water and ice the latter being formed during on-cycles and melting during off-cycles. As shown the mass 8 is a layer of sponge cloth held in place by bands 9 including springs 10 and has a depending flap 11 guiding excess water into a container 12 which may be of substantial capacity or be emptied periodically by a syphon. In a modification the refrigerator has upper and lower freezer and storage compartments each with its own evaporator each or both of which have sponge cloth in contact therewith. The sponge cloth may be carried between the evaporator and a grid spaced therefrom.
