Abstract

1457871 Refrigeration; defrosting HOOVER Ltd 21 Jan 1974 [23 Oct 1972] 48647/72 Heading F4H The base 16 of a freezer compartment 13 is formed with an aperture 20 containing a waterpervious seal 34 and a heater is provided for melting ice formed in the seal. As shown, the aperture extends through a partition 16 between the freezer compartment 13. and the main refrigerator compartment 15, and an evaporator plate 22, serving both compartments, is engaged by the seal 34 which is formed of open cell polyurethane foam. The evaporator is formed from roll bonded aluminium sheets and is provided with passageways 25 for refrigerant and, in the freezer compartment, with a space for an electric heating element 27. The freezer compartment includes a screen 37, formed with grilles 38, 39, and a fan 40. In operation, condensation formed in the rear of the freezer compartment fills the seal 34 and freezes. The heater in the freezer compartment is switched on periodically to defrost the upper part of the evaporator and to melt the ice in the seal, whereby water can flow down the whole of the evaporator into a trough 46. The lower part of the evaporator is thermostatically controlled to defrost on every "off" cycle of the compressor. Hot gas from the compressor may be used for defrosting in place of the electric heater. The partition 16 may be removable.
