[Also in Group XL (a)] An analogue-to-digital encoder comprises a cathode-ray tube having means for deflecting the electron beam in response to an analogue signal, a plurality of output terminals (A, B, C) one for each digital order of the encoded signal, and a plurality of inductive coupling means connected to the output terminals and arranged to be selectively energized by the current of the beam so as to produce at the output terminals a digitally-coded signal corresponding to the analogue signal. The analogue signal is applied to one deflection plate 11 while a bias signal is applied to the other. A series of anodes 0-7 are connected to primary windings of transformers TC7, TB7, TA7, &c. so that when the beam falls on a particular anode (this may be ensured by interposing a quantizing grid between the electron gun and the anodes), a pulse is induced in each of the associated secondary windings and appears at one or more of the output terminals A, B, C. The transformers may be within the glass envelope or outside. Instead of primary windings the electron beam may be passed through annular cores to induce output pulses, or specially-shaped cores, each associated with one output terminal, may be used. The beam may be modulated with an R.F. signal so as to give a prolonged output signal.
