Abstract

934,242. Producing neutrons. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 21, 1962 [June 26, 1961], No. 23119/61. Class 39 (4). A radiation shield for a neutron source comprises a liquid retaining capacity arranged between the source and a radiation facility, a supply of liquid having a large absorption crosssection for neutrons, and means for passing the liquid between the supply and the liquidretaining capacity. The drawing shows a vertical cross-section of a neutron source reactor comprising a core 1 surrounded by a number of caves. Between the core and each of the lateral caves 2, 3 is a two-part neutron and gamma shutter 6 operated in guillotine fashion as shown; each shutter 6 consists of two composite slabs of lead, synthetic plastic sheeting and cadmium suspended on roller chains to form a balanced system. Above the core is a rotatable lead shield plug 9 provided with a number of plugged holes (not shown) to give access to the core from the upper cave 4. The neutron shutter for the upper cave comprises a tank 10 adapted to be filled with liquid neutron absorbent (e.g. aqueous boric acid solution) by a pump 14 from a header tank 13. If the liquid in tank 13 has sufficient head the filling of tank 10 can be made automatic if the pump fails. Normally the tank 10 is filled, but it is emptied when the cave 4 is to be irradiated and refilled after the required exposure. Whilst emptying and filling the intensity of radiation in the cave 4 changes, but does so uniformly across the whole area of the cave.
