934,218. Irradiating articles. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Dec. 11, 1961 [Dec. 30, 1960], No. 44853/60. Class 98 (1). A package irradiation system comprises a railway on which packages are conveyed on trolleys past a radiation source inside a shielding chamber, means being provided for lifting and lowering the trolleys vertically through apertures in the shield. In the form shown, packages 26 are carried on trolleys 5 running along overhead rail tracks 4. The tracks are arranged so that the trolleys traverse repeatedly across both faces of a plate-like radiation source 2. The whole is enclosed in a chamber formed by a concrete shield 1. The trolleys are introduced and removed from the chamber vertically by lifts 11, 12 moving up and down in openings 8, 9. The trolleys are conveyed to and from the chamber along rail tracks 6, 7 above the chamber, and each lift has a short length 15 of rail which can be aligned (in its raised position) with the tracks 6, 7 outside the chamber, or (in its lowered position) with the tracks 4 inside the chamber. The lifts are operated by a motor-driven chain 14. They are provided with radiation shields 13 at their upper and lower ends, which act as plugs for the openings when the lifts are either fully raised or fully lowered. Additional collars 23 above and below the openings increase the effective shielding in the neighbourhood of these openings. Specification 927,364 is referred to.
