948,973. Irradiation apparatus. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Oct. 23, 1962 [Oct. 31, 1961], No. 38913/61. Heading H5R. A package irradiation plant comprises a biological shield 4 around a source of gamma radiation, a labyrinth through the shield, a turntable 5 at a junction between two passages 6, 7 in the labyrinth and gamma radiation shielding 10 associated with the turntable, the arrangement being such that movement of the turntable will move the shielding to register in turn with each passage, thereby substantially closing the passage and preventing radiation scatter across the junction. The packages 1 are conveyed on carriers 2 suspended from an overhead monorail 3 and admitted through a gap in the shielding 10 one at a time on a further length of monorail 8 mounted on the turntable. The turntable is rotated, thus closing passage 6 and opening passage 7, and the package is transmitted to the second passage 7 by using an ejector 9. The scatter shield may be comprised by two diametrically opposed arcuate shields as shown or it may be in the form of a right vertical cylinder, a passageway being formed therein to receive a package and extending only a part of the way therethrough.
