Abstract
1,009,000. Irradiation apparatus. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 19, 1964 [April 2, 1963], No. 13096/63. Heading H5R. Package carriers 12 are conveyed into or out of an irradiation chamber through an entrance or exit in the biological shield 2 comprising a door in the form of a right vertical cylinder 3 of shielding material, having a vertical recess into which the carrier is moved, the door being rotated to bring the recess into register with the interior or exterior of the cell. As shown in Fig. 1, a carrier entering the cell is suspended from a motor oil track 11 by a four-wheel bogie 13. The carriers are pushed along the track by the push arms 14 of an intermittentlymoving driving chain 16, which abut against the shanks 17 of the carriers, the chain is driven by a shaft 19 through a wheel 21. The carrier is finally pushed on to a short length of track 8, attached to the door within the recess 6. The door is rotated through 180 degrees on a bearing 4 by means of a slewing ring 5 and an hydraulic motor, to align the track 8 with an internal track 9 and the carrier removed from the recess by a chain 15. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), two diametricallyopposite recesses are provided, with a push-rod slidably located in an aperture between them. Movement of one carrier into a recess causes the rod to eject a carrier from the opposite recess, after which the door is rotated to make the empty recess available to a further carrier. Extra shielding, which may be movable, may be provided externally around the cylinder. Permanent magnets may be attached to the rail track 8 in the door to hold the carrier in position during rotation of the door. Specification 996,775 is referred to.
