Abstract

934,210. Electrically - tripped switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 29, 1959 [Jan. 21, 1959], No. 2283/59. Class 38 (5). A circuit - breaker operating mechanism, shown in the " contacts-open " position in Fig. 2, comprises a pivoted contact arm 3 connected to a pivoted lever 8 through a spring SP, the lever 8 in turn being connected through a toggle 11, 12 controlled by a weight 15 to an arm 5 co-pivotal with the arm 3, which arm is engageable with a link 7, pivoted to arm 3, by a two-part latch 6. To close the contacts 1, 2, members 5, 7 are engaged by operation of the latch 6 and the weight 15 is raised by energization of a solenoid, thereby aligning the toggle 11, 12, tensioning the spring SP and rotating the lever 8 and members 3, 5, 7 anti-clockwise and clockwise, respectively, Fig. 1 (not shown). To open, the latch 6 is released to allow the spring SP to separate the contacts 1, 2 and subsequent deenergization of the solenoid causes the toggle 11, 12 to be broken by the weight 15 which restores members 5, 8 to the position shown in Fig. 2. The latch 6 may be actuated mechanically by the breaker opening and closing mechanism, Fig. 3 (not shown), or may be held engaged by energization of a holding coil and automatically released by the action of the spring SP when the coil is de-energized, Fig. 4 (not shown), in which case the latch is re-engaged after the opening operation is completed. The latch constructions described with reference to Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) are generally similar to those of Specification 849,658.
