Abstract

An hydraulic oscillatory drive comprises a piston 5 which is axially movable in a housing 2 and is provided along one side with a rack 7 engaging a pinion 9 attached to a shaft 8 rotatably mounted in the housing, the peripheral surface of the piston opposite the shaft and/or the inner surface of the housing adjacent the peripheral surface having one or more recesses 11 adapted to be filled with an hydraulic fluid fed to the ends of the housing for moving the piston whereby the pressure exerted by the tooth flanks of the pinion and rack in a direction transverse of the axis of the piston during its movement is completely or almost completely compensated. The fluid is supplied to the ends of the housing to reciprocate the piston under the control of a reversing valve and each end of the piston is provided with passages 12 having one-way valves 13 to enable the fluid in whichever end of the housing is connected to the source to pass to the space 11. In another embodiment, the recess is formed in the housing and the fluid pressure is supplied to the recess through the passages and one-way valves and a longitudinal groove in the piston. In other embodiments, a number of recesses is formed in the piston, each separated by a sealing land and the fluid is supplied to the recesses through pipes external of the housing. The ends of the pistons are slanted at 14 so that the force exerted by the pressure fluid on the piston is directed partly towards the shaft.
