934,035. Diaphragms for electrolytic cells. MASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. June 8, 1962 [July 26, 1961], No. 22356/62. Class 41. Diaphragms for electrolytic cells, e.g. for generating oxygen and hydrogen, are made impervious to gas at the top when wet but pervious to electric current, and of open weave fabric at the lower part. An anode 1 and a cathode 2 are mounted on either side of a woven asbestos diaphragm 3, densely woven at the base 3<SP>11</SP> to give mechanical strength, and at the top 3<SP>1</SP> extending downwards for 10- 15 % of the height of the diaphragm. By this means the oxygen and hydrogen gases given off vigorously at the top level of the electrolyte are prevented from mixing through the diaphragm and the explosion risk is lessened. The fabric is closely woven at the top to give 100% masking to light but in the centre the threads may be spaced apart by the amount of twice the thread diameter. The threads may be reinforced with nickel wire or plastic thread. Alternatively, the diaphragm may be of a thin permeable fabric with reinforcing strip or strips applied at the top.
