Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the reduction of hydrogen occulding capacity in a cell and to improve the reliability of the cell by a construction wherein a hydrogen- occluding material enclosed in a protective material which offers water repellency and air-permeability is attached to a portion in the gaseous phase within a cell container. CONSTITUTION:Referring to the diagram, there are shown a cell case 1; an insulating base plate 2; a nickel anode 3 and a cadmium cathode wound spirally through a separator 5; and a hydrogen-occluding material 13 enclosed in a protective material 14 with water repellency and air permeability and arranged on an upper insulating plate 6. Since the water repellency of the protective material repels an electrolyte even if the electrolyte touches the material, the electrolyte is prevented from entering into the inside. Accordingly, the power of the electrolyte is not seen to decrease and only the hydrogen gas generated is occluded. As a result, the rise of the pressure in the cell because of the hydrogen gas hardly occurs, so that the cell can be used in portable equipment.
