Abstract

Rubber is directly adhered to a textile consisting of a fibre with a smooth surface by vulcanizing the rubber in contact with the textile in the presence of a phenol, an aldehyde and a nuclear halogenated or cyanogenated aromatic compound. The phenol may be phenol, resorcinol, pyrogallol, 1- or 2-hydroxy naphthalene or 1:2-dihydroxy naphthalene. The aldehyde may be present per se or may be formed in situ during heat treatment from a substance such as hexamethylene tetramine or paraldehyde which yields an aldehyde on heating. The halogenated compound may be chlorobenzene, iodobenzene, o-dichlorobenzene, dibromobenzene, 1-chloronaphthalene, o-, m- or p-chloroaniline or m-chloronitrobenzene. The cyanogenated compound may be benzonitrile. The phenol and aldehyde may be added at a minimum amount of 5 parts by weight per 100 of rubber.ALSO:Fibres which have a smooth surface such as polyamide, regenerated cellulose or mineral fibres are directly adhered to rubber by vulcanizing the rubber in contact with the fibre in the presence of a phenol, an aldehyde and a nuclear halogenated or cyanogenated aromatic compound. The phenol may be phenol, resorcinol, pyrogallol, 1- or 2-hydroxynaphthalene or 1:2-di-hydroxynaphthalene. The aldehyde may be present per se or may be formed in situ during vulcanization by the decomposition of a substance such as hexamethylene tetramine or paraldehyde. The halogenated compound may be chlorobenzene, iodobenzene, o-dichlorobenzene, dibromobenzene, 1-chloronaphthalene, o-, m- or p-chloroaniline or m-chloronitro-benzene. The cyanogenated compound may be benzonitrile. The phenol and aldehyde should be added at a minimum of 5 parts by weight per 100 of rubber.
