Abstract
Polymers of olefins are made by feeding one or more polymerizable olefins in the liquid phase, or dissolved in a hydrocarbon diluent, and one component of a Ziegler-type catalyst, to a reaction zone having the form of a closed loop which is kept filled with liquid, continuously feeding into the reaction zone at a point distant from the point of entry of the olefin feed the other component of the Ziegler-type catalyst, continuously pumping the liquid reaction mixture round the zone, and withdrawing liquid from the reaction zone at such a rate as to keep the volume of liquid in the zone constant. The Ziegler-type catalyst consists of a halide of a polyvalent metal of Group IV, V, or VI, of the Periodic Table according to Mendel<\>eeff, and a metal alkyl such as diethyl and monoethyl aluminium chlorides. The molecular weight of the polymer can be controlled by incorporating a minor proportion of hydrogen in the monomer feed. The olefin feed may be ethylene and/or propylene, or ethylene, propylene and dicyclopentadiene, or butene-1, ethylene and propylene, or ethylene and butylene-1, or ethylene, propylene, and octene-1. The Specification includes a flow diagram of the process together with means for recovery of solvent and unreacted monomer.
