Abstract
A continuous process for polymerizing an alpha-olefin monomer which comprises maintaining in a reaction zone an alpha-olefin monomer, at least a substantial part of which is in liquid form and a catalyst comprising a transition metal halide activated with an organo-metallic compound, and periodically venting from the reaction zone a slurry of polymerizate in admixture with unreacted monomer, the frequency of the venting being sufficient to maintain a substantially material balance in the reaction zone. Hydrogen may be present. the preferred monomer is propylene, but butene-1 may also be used, and also propylene in admixture with ethylene, and butene-1. The periodic venting of the slurry can be accomplished by a suitable time-discharge valve controlled mechanically or electrically. The alphaolefin feed may contain minor amounts of ethane, propane or butane, i.e. hydrocarbons liquefiable under the conditions of polymerization. The preferred organometallic compounds are Al(C2H5)3 and (C2H5)2AlCl. The transition metal halide may be violet TiCl3 or TiCl3XAlCl3 where x = 0.1 to 1. The Specification includes a flow diagram.
