Abstract

Acetaldehyde polymers are subjected to an acylation reaction under a pressure greater than 800 Kg./sq. cm. in an anhydrous liquid reaction medium which is a solvent of polyacetaldehydes. The reaction medium may contain, or be constituted by, pyridine or one of its substituted derivatives. The acylation may take place using acetic anhydride at ordinary temperature and a pressure higher than 1,000 Kg./sq. cm. and the pressure may be prolonged for between 4 to 30 hours. The polymer may be isolated, e.g. by precipitation, using an aqueous alkaline solution, e.g. a solution of sodium carbonate. Specification 911,959 is referred to.
