Abstract

933,119. Feeding sheets; platen printing- machines. SCHNELLPRESSENFABRIK A.G. HEIDELBERG. Oct. 16, 1961 [Aug. 4, 1961], No. 36981/61. Classes 100 (1) and 100 (2). An arrangement for positioning a sheet in a platen printing-machine, in which the feed and delivery of a sheet is effected by a pair of grippers intermittently turned through 90 degrees parallel to the platen plane and swung simultaneously with the platen which is pivotally mounted, is characterized in that a reversible control device is adapted to change the direction of movement of front stops relative to a side stop in order to align the fed sheet optionally from left to right or vice versa before impression. The front stops 7, 8 are slidably mounted on a rod 11 and fixed to a second rod 41, loosely carried by plates 42, 43, from the rod 11. The latter is supported by two levers 12, 13 from a shaft 14, rotatably mounted at the rear of the platen 2. The shaft is oseillated during movement of the platen to pivot the front stops away from the platen to allow the grippers to pass, the grippers then opening so that the sheet 3 drops onto the front stops. The front stop 7 is provided with a projection engaging a curved slot 50 in a plate 51 attached to the platen, so that the rod 41 and the front stops fixed thereto are moved to the right relative to the rod 11 on return movement of the front stops to the platen. Thus, the sheet 3 is moved upwardly and to the right to engage a side guide 9 fixed to the rod 11. At the same time, the side guide and rod 11 are moved to the left under the control of the shaft 14, which is spring-urged to maintain a lever 18 carrying a roller 19 in contact with a cam surface 21. The upper edge of the lever 18 has a cam surface 22 engaged by a roller 23, to raise and lower a side guide 10, detachably mounted on the platen. In operation, the side guide 10 enters a recess in the grippers 2 to engage the side edge of the sheet 3. The side guide 9 has a depending arm provided with a stud 57, engaging an angled guide in a plate 59 mounted on the rod 41, so that on rotation of the shaft 14, the side guide is inclined at a greater angle to the platen than the front stops to allow the grippers to pass. The side guide 9 may be removed from the rod 11, the plate 50 unscrewed from the platen, and clamping screws in the plate 42, 43, tightened, so that the rod 41 and front stops 7, 8 are rigidly secured to the rod 11, whereby the front stops move the sheet 3 upwardly and to the left to register it against the side guide 10. Further, the drive to shaft 14 may be disconnected by loosening joints 29, 31, so that a sheet is held in position by the grippers 4 during printing. Alternatively, a side guide 109 is mounted in a slideway 176 to accommodate various sizes of sheets. The front stops 107, 108 are mounted on a crossrod supported by a rotatable shaft 114. The latter is movable lengthwise as before, under the action of a co-operating cam 121 and roller 119. The cam 121 is pivotally mounted on a bolt 173 and adjusted to one of two positions by a pin 170 engaging one of two apertures 171, 172 in the platen. The cam surface has a central depression, Fig. 16, so that when the pin engages the aperture 171, the roller moves from the depression over the surface 175 to move the shaft and front stops to the left and when the pin engages the aperture 172 the roller moves from the surface 174 to the depression to move the shaft and front stops to the right. Thus a sheet is moved to abut the side guide 108 or 109, respectively. The side guide 109 is pivoted away from the platen by a control rod 180 to allow the grippers 104 to pass.
