932,603. Semi-conductor devices. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Sept. 18, 1959 [Sept. 19, 1958], No. 31865/59. Addition to 914,592. Class 37. [Also in Group XXII] In making a sealed casing containing a semiconductor element and comprising two metal parts of different hardness, a rim of one of which fits into a channel in the other, the metal parts are sealed together after assembly by cold plastic deformation of one of them in such a way that the part of harder metal is elastically deformed. In one such arrangement, Fig. 2, a copper plate 1 on which the semi-conductor element is mounted comprises an insulating grommet 3 and an annular groove 4 into which the flanged rim 5 of steel cap 2 is inserted. While the cap is elastically deformed by an inward radial pressure 7 the material of the base is cold deformed at 6 to clamp it in the deformed position. The deformation may be such as to leave an annular space 4a or sufficient to press the cap firmly against the inner wall of the groove.
