Abstract
Coating compositions and waxes are rendered flame-resistant by treating or incorporating them with an aliphatic carboxylic acid having at least 3 C atoms and having a bromine content of at least 50%, or an ester, amide, alkali alkaline earth or other salt, or other derivative of such an acid, preferably in alcoholic or other solution. Examples of suitable acids are a :b -dibromo-butyric acid, b :g -dibromo-butyric acid, a :b -dibromo-isobutyric acid, a :b -dibromo-propionic acid, a :b :g :d -tetrabromo-caproic acid. The acids or derivatives are used to the extent of at least 2,5%, preferably 5-10%, of the material treated, and may be used with other flame-resistant materials such as the phosphates, borates, sulphates, chlorides or silicates of alkali, alkaline earth, earth, or heavy metals, chromates, ammonium compounds, boric acid, silicone resins, organic phosphates such as trichloro-ethyl phosphate, tri-(2:3-dibromopropyl)-phosphate, tribromoethyl phosphate, penta bromophenol, and tetrabromo biphenal. An example describes the addition of the dibromocaproic acid to a nitro lacquer.ALSO:Synthetic plastics such as polythene, polyvinyl acetate, polyamides and polyesters, are rendered flame-resistant by treating them with an aliphatic carboxylic acid having at least 3 C atoms and having a bromine content of at least 50%, or an ester, amide, alkali, alkaline earth or other salt, or other derivative of such an acid, preferably in alcoholic or other solution. Examples of suitable acids are a :b -dibromobutyric acid, b :g -dibromo-butyric acid, a :b -dibromo-isobutyric acid, a :b -dibromo-propionic acid, a :b :g :d -tetrabromo-caproic acid. The acids or derivatives are applied to the extent of at least 2,5%, preferably 5-10%, of the material treated, and may be used with other flame-resistant materials such as the phosphates, borates, sulphates, chlorides or silicates of alkali, alkaline earth, earth, or heavy metals, chromates, ammonium compounds, boric acid, silicone resins, organic phosphates such as trichloro-ethyl phosphate, tri-(2:3-dibromopropyl)-phosphate, tribromoethyl phosphate, penta bromophenol, and tetrabromo biphenol. Examples describe the addition of dibromocaproic acid to polythene powder and to polyvinyl-acetate solution in ethyl acetate, subsequently sheeted and to a nitro lacquer.ALSO:Wood, cardboard, wall-, decorative- and other papers, textiles and coating compositions are rendered flame-resistant by impregnating them with an aliphatic carboxylic acid having at least 3C atoms and having a bromine content of at least 50%, or an ester, amide, alkali, alkaline earth or other salt, or other derivative of such an acid, preferably in alcoholic or other solution. Examples of suitable acids are a :b -dibromo-butyric acid, b :m -dibromo-butyric acid, a :b -dibromo-isobutyric acid, a :b -dibromo-propionic acid, a :b :g :d -tetrabromo-caproic acid. The acids or derivatives are applied to the extent of at least 2,5%, preferably 5-10%, of the material treated, and may be used with other flame-resistant materials such as the phosphates, borates, sulphates, chlorides or silicates of alkali, alkaline earth, earth, or heavy metals, chromates, ammonium compounds, boric acid, silicone resins, organic phosphates such as trichloro-ethyl phosphate, tri-(2:3-dibromopropyl)-phosphate, tribromoethyl phosphate, penta bromophenol, and tetrabromo biphenal. Examples describe the treatment with a solution of dibromo-caproic acid of paper and presswood board, and the addition of the acid to a nitro lacquer.
