Abstract

932,296. Rolling. DAVY & UNITED ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. March 10, 1960 [Dec. 12, 1958], No. 40229/58. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXIX] A rolling mill includes a variable width descaling spray bank for spraying the material about to pass through the mill, and the spray bank includes a tubular portion 21, 22, 23 supplied with liquid by a pipe 16 which feeds spraying nozzles 12 via flexible pipes 13 attached to spaced outlets 15. Each of two end sections 18 houses a hollow piston 25 with a head 26 and a rear part engaged by a lead screw 27 connected through gearing to an electric motor 19. Thus the pistons may be driven into the adjacent tubular parts 21 and 23 to close one or more of the outlets 15 from the supply of liquid, thereby controlling the width of the spray. The motors may be remotely operated from a control panel. In Fig. 3 a single distributing chamber 17 is supplied with liquid at 16, and has nozzle feed outlets 28-35 which may be cut off as desired by a piston head 26 driven by a motor, gearing and a lead screw 27.
