Abstract

932,292. Matrix stores. COMPAGNIE DES MACHINES BULL. July 29, 1960 [Aug. 3, 1959], No. 26536/60. Class 106 (1). A code translator for a digital computer comprises an addressable matrix memory 12 which is first filled with characters in the output code at addresses selected by the input code and instruction registers controlling the translation and the format of the data in the output code. The translator is described as being suitable for a computer as described in Specification 932,291 in which information is handled in " eatenµ " or blocks of words. An input buffer 1 receives first a main instruction which is passed to analyser 5; it specifies the translation and possibly arranges for the filling of 12 with the appropriate output code characters. Next word instructions are passed through unit 6 to analyser 7; they specify the type of data to be translated (e.g. signed or unsigned numbers, alphanumeric words &c.), the number of words to be translated, and any " format " instructions for the output. The number of words is entered in counter 11, and data to be translated is now passed to register 2, and one character at a time to register 3 for translation by address-selecing circuits 13, the output data being assembled in 17. Format characters are inserted by a coder 9 under control of the word instruction analyser. A " card positioning circuit " 15 is provided to receive line-by-line the data read from punched cards and provide serially the characters represented by successive columns, when the input code is a punched card code; it is also operative when the output code is a punched card code. The memory 12 may be notionally divided into zones for translation between various input and output codes, the main instruction then specifying the appropriate zone. For certain input codes (e.g. punched tape) some of the input characters (e.g. " Tab." characters) may lead not to output characters but to complementary instructions such as the specifying of a certain zone of 12 for subsequent translation; an analysing circuit (not shown) is provided for this.
