Abstract

931,885. Paper with pressure-rupturable coating. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. July 20, 1961 [Aug. 26, 1960 ; Oct.,3, 1960], No. 26409/61. Class 96. A record sheet comprises a base material having coated on one side thereof a pressurerupturable matrix containing a dispersion of liquid droplets including a substance capable of producing a visible or a latent image, the liquid being releasable from the matrix by the local application of pressure, and the base material having a porosity such that, on release of the liquid, the substance passes through it to produce an image on the uncoated surface. As shown, a sheet 10 of porous material, e.g. paper or fabric, is provided with a pressurerupturable matrix coating 11 containing droplets of coloured dye material and a second coating 13 of flow-metering polymeric material. 12 is a copy-receiving sheet. When pressure is applied locally, e.g. by a stylus 14, the matrix is ruptured at 15 and a portion of the dye thus released penetrates through the sheet 10 to form a coloured mark 17. Another portion of the dye penetrates through the flow-metering layer 13 to form another coloured mark 18 on the copy-receiving sheet 12. In a second embodiment, not shown, the marking material in the matrix is colourless, and the upper surfaces of the sheets 10 and 12 are both provided with coatings which will react with the marking material when it is released to form the coloured marks 17 and 18. In a third embodiment, not shown, the liquid inclusions in the matrix contain a dye and a pigment of different colours. When the droplets are ruptured, the dye penetrates the sheet 10, but the pigment is filtered out thereby, so that the mark 17 shows the colour of the dye only ; the metering layer 13, however, is permeable to the pigment as well as the dye, so that the mark 18 shows the combined colour. In a fourth embodiment, not shown, the marking material is a phototropic dye material. When the droplets are ruptured, a colourless latent image 17 is formed, and may be made visible by irradiation. Any of these embodiments may be modified by omitting the layer 13, or by making it impermeable if no copy sheet 12 is to be used. An oversheet may be placed on top of the sheet 10 so that a further copy is formed on its under side. The Specification includes lists of suitable dyes, pigments, matrix materials and flow-metering coatings for all embodiments, and describes the preparation of the coating composition and its application to form the layer 11. The reactive material used in the second embodiment may be attapulgite clay. Specification 845,939 is referred to.
