MANIFOLD-PAPER'. i
. i Speecation of Letters Patent. Patented 001;. 11, v1910.
vApplication tiled November i6, 1908. Serial No. 462,885.
To all wlwm it may' concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. WEST, residing at Franklin, in the county of Venango and State 0f Pennsylvania, a citizen of the United States,'have invented or 'discovered certain new anduseful Improvements in Manifold-Paper, ofA which improvementsthe following is a specification.-
It iscustomary in 'makingup pads or `books for sale-slips to place between theA printed forms manifold paper order that Aduplicate or triplicate copiesinay bev made at the same time. These manifold sheets have to be removed after one record has been made and placed between other printed forms for anpth'er record and 'its copy or copies. papers is so objectionable that in sorne/ cases the manifold lpaper 'isA thrown/away after one use The objections to this method have been met to a small extent by applying the carbon to the backs of alternate printed forms, but in' this case only theoriginaland one copy can be made. Y
The object' of the invention described bon so applied that the nan1es,.\vords, lines,
characters. etc., are in intaglio and appearwhite and-theieinaining surfaceis covered with the carbon. `The invention ishereinafter ,more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification-is.shown an original record sheet, and y'two copies, one of which is the manifold. Y
sheets l onrwhicli will be Amade the original record are printed in the usual manner, with 'the desired words, lines, 'characters, etc.
wordsflines, etc., with the copying ink. A. suitable ink consists of beeswax, transparent 1 soap, a coloring material, ground with the This handling of the manifold.
.beeswax and treated with car (i di-s'ulfid,
and'olive-oil. 'When/ riting on sheet l.;
while it on sheet theink in the latter being soft and ad sive will adhere along the lines ofpress re, to the back' of sheetf v1 so Athat when th *latter is removedtheV ink will be partia y removed from sheet 2'as to make the ritten wordsplainly legible on such sli t.. I
A plainsheet 3 or one similar to sheet' 1 may tie/placed between sheetsjl yand 2 and when eet 1 is written on the ink on sheet 2 adhere to the back of sheet 3, produc- 'ng the writing in reverse. But if this sheet be soft and thin, the ink Will quickly soak through giving a positive triplicate copy of the record.
I claim herein as my invention :v
l. A lmanifold paper having words, lines,
etc., outlined by Vcarbon or other coloring material, the words, etc., being in intaglio,
thecarbon or othermaterial being capable.
of being transferred by pressure to a superimposed surface.
2. A blank for duplicate records having Words, lnes,' etc., formed byA covering the .surface of the blank with a transfer ink eX- cept the portions of the surface corresponding' to such words, lines,'etc., the transfer vr'ink being capablepf being transferred 'by pressure toa superimposed surface.
3. A manifolding sheet having w'ords, etc.,
outlined by carbon or other coloring lmaterial, the Words being inl intaglio, 4and lthe carbon being capableof being transferred by -pressure to a surface in contact therewith. In the making up of a. book .or pad, the
4. An article of the class described comprising a sheet, a copying or transfer coating on one surface thereof'and an uncoated text in inta-glioin said coating.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand..
