Abstract

1,136,099. Papermaking; pressure-sensitive copying sheets. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. 22 Dec., 1966 [27 Jan., 1966], No. 3694/66. Headings D2A and D2B [Also in Division B2] A dry sheet material (1), e.g. of paper or plastics polymer, has a foraminous structure, and contains within and filling its foramina a solid material (4) having entrapped therein and dispersed therethoughout droplets (3) of a liquid, the solid material being rupturable by pressure or heat to release the entrapped liquid. The solid material may be gelatin, casein, polyvinyl alcohol or a mixture thereof. The droplets may be contained as an emulsion therein, or may be contained as cores in microcapsules (fig. 6, not shown). The sheet material may have a coating on one or each side, which may be protective, or may be impermeable to the liquid of the droplets, so causing it to emerge on the other side of the sheet only. The liquid may be dryable adhesive so that when the sheet is pressed onto one or between two other sheets or solid objects they can be caused to adhere. The droplets may comprise a colourless dye-stuff, e.g. crystal violet lactone, in a solvent, and the coating may contain a phenolic polymer so that on rupture of the solid material, the two are brought into contact and react to give a colour over the area pressed. If one reagent is encapsulated, the other may also be present in the foramina as droplets or solid particles, e.g. the capsules may contain an epoxy resin and the binder a catalyst, or the capsules may contain a dissolved dyestuff and the binder particles of clay. The foraminous sheet may be made on a Fourdrinier machine in which the wire has vertical pins arranged in the pattern to be produced, the length of the pins beng equal to or a little greater than the thickness of the paper. Alternatively finished paper or plastics sheet can be perforated mechanically, or particles of a material insoluble in the pulp can be incorporated and subsequently leached out or sublimed off. The mixture of solid material and liquid droplets may be applied by ordinary paper-coating techniques, on or off the machine, the web being carried over a bed to prevent egress of the mixture to the underside. A doctor blade may be set to leave a coating of the mixture, or so that the mixture fills the foramina but substantially none remains on the surface of the sheet.
