931,860. Universal joints. METALASTIK Ltd. May 17, 1961 [June 2, 1960], No. 19578/60. Class 80 (2). A universal coupling of the intermediate disc or link type for a motor vehicle propeller shaft or half-shaft, includes rubber joints each comprising an inner ball-like part 13, an outer cup 11 and an interposed compressed rubber layer 14 bonded (by vulcanisation) to the inner part 13 and to at least a part of the outer part 11. In the disc-type coupling shown the rubber joints are arranged in two pairs bolted to shaft flanges 27, 28 on diameters at right angles, with the cups formed in a one-piece or two-piece die-cast aluminium disc or formed by complementary pressings in two metal disc parts held together by swaging 20, bolting, riveting, or welding. The rubber layer 14 is bonded to both cup parts or to one cup part and united by an adhesive with the other. The link type coupling, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), has three tangential links connected at their ends to alternate shaft spiders by rubber joints, and is used at the outer end of a halfshaft, the inner end of which has a simple Hooke's joint.
