Abstract

931,153. Quenching-apparatus. W. CULL, and RZEPPA Ltd. Nov. 11, 1959 [Nov. 12, 1958], No. 36293/58. Class 72. Apparatus for quenching parts having reentrant surfaces comprises a quench tank, means to maintain the quench liquid at a predetermined temperature, means to immerse the parts into the liquid, and means to direct a flow of liquid on to the re-entrant surface area as the part enters the liquid and while subsequently immersed therein. As shown, an article 24 to be quenched is held in place by clamp 43 under hood 44. The downward movement of ram 36 lowers head 18 and all the components connected therewith including connecting jaw 37 which contacts carriage 20 by means of tongue 39. Carriage 20 runs on rails 23 and supports article 24. There is a simultaneous downward movement of piston 15 into oil-filled cylinder 10 causing oil first to flow out of radial ports 19 and then, when these ports are covered by the piston, causing a high pressure flow of oil up hollow piston-rod 16, through fluid line 49 to ports 50 and 52 and along pipe-line 53 from which it issues to impinge under pressure on the underside of article 24 as the latter descends into the oil contained in tank 1. When piston 15 reaches the end of its stroke, spherical surface 17 thereof seats on surface 14, and a flow of oil to the underside of article 24 is still maintained, though at much reduced pressure, from pump 3 through pipe 6, rail 5, non-return valve 13, and pipe 12 to hollow piston-rod 16. Oil is withdrawn from tank 1 via rail 8 and passed through heat exchanger 4 before being returned to the tank through the nozzles 7 of pressure rail 5. After a predetermined time, the rotation of all the submerged carriages 20 by motor 30 brings another carriage into engagement with connecting jaw 37. It is then raised, the quenched article 24 removed, a fresh one put in its place, and the cycle of operations repeated.
