Abstract

Monomer material comprising carbon-carbon unsaturation is polymerized in an anhydrous system with the aid of a catalyst comprising at least two parts (i) and (ii); part (i) is the reaction product, preferably polymeric, of unsaturated organic material (excluding ethylene) containing at least one C-C unsaturated group, with at least one Friedel-Crafts type component 2(b) in absence of any organometallic component (1), while part (ii) comprises at least one component (1). OOptionally, part (i) is the reaction product of said unsaturated material with component 2(b) and a modifying polar compound 2(a) and/or a carrier component (3). Catalyst part (ii) may contain additional ingredients selected from components 2(a), 2(b), (3). The catalyst components 1, 2(a), 2(b) and (3) are in general those described in Specifications 821,971, 873,656 and 873,657. In examples, monomers uhich are homo- or copolymerized with the catalyst of the invention are:- ethylene, propylene, styrene, divinylbenzene, vinyltoluene, acrylonitrile and vinylcarbazole; monomers used to make part (i) of the catalyst which usually contains preformed homo- or copolymer are:- isobutylene, dicyclopentadiene, bodied linseed oil, vinyltoluene, tung oil, turpentine, dipentene, styrene, alphamethylstyrene, butadiene, divinylbenzene, isoprene, hexene-1, 2-aminoethylvinyl ether, 2-(t-butylamino) ethyl methacrylate, 2-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate, 4-vinylpyridine, 2-vinyl-5-ethylpyridine, butenes-1 and -2, 3-methylbutene-1, vinylcarbazole, acetylene, vinylidene chloride, N-isopropylacrylamide, cyclopentene, methylacrylamide, oiticica oil, dehydrated castor oil and acrylonitrile. The products are generally block copolymers. Specification 873,658 also is referred to.
