Abstract

930,853. Electron microscopes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 10, 1959 [Sept. 13, 1958], No. 30922/59. Class 39 (1). The shutter for an electron microscope comprises two parts 3, 4 pivoted at 6 to a base-plate 2 and held closed by two compression springs 11, 12 each attached at one end to the shutter part and at the other to a pivot 10 on a rod 9 which may be moved into an operative position by rotating a shaft 15 having a driving pin 18 engaging cams 19 on the rod 9. Rotation of the shaft 15 moves the rod 9 and hence the spring pivot 10 to 10a in which position the springs tend to urge the parts 3, 4 apart. One such part, however, is prevented from movement by a rod 24, which has two arms engaging one or other abutment 22, 27, the selection being made by axial movement of the rod 24. Rotation of the rod 24 releases the engagement of the selected arm and abutment thereby allowing the other part of the shutter to open. In the closed position the parts 3, 4 overlap slightly. A separate rod 24 may operate on each part separately.
