Abstract

930,653. Semi-conductor devices. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. Aug. 12, 1959 [Aug. 12, 1958], No. 27638/59. Class 37. A semi-conductor device, such as a Ge or Si rectifier or transistor, is mounted on a metal plate which is fitted into an open end of a hollow housing, and a second metal plate fixed to and parallel to the first plate, is joined to said open end of the housing by electrical butt-welding, the first plate being of such shape and dimensions that it co-operates with the inner surface of the housing during assembly to guide the parts into the desired positions. As shown, a cylindrical metallic tube 1, into one end of which a metal tube 15 is sealed by means of a glass member 2, is seated in a recess 4a in a jig 4 of insulating material, and a metal cover member 6, which comprises an upstanding disc 6a and a boss 7 on which is mounted a semi-conductor element 8, e.g. a Si rectifier, is applied to the open end of the tube 1, the periphery 1d of which is bevelled, the disc 6a being aclose fit within the neck of tube 1. A tongs-like welding electrode 5 surrounds the part of tube 1 above the jig 4, and a second welding appliance 11 bears down on the cover member 6, a pin 10 thereon, which may be formed with a bore, being received in a recess 12. A gas, e.g. nitrogen, is supplied to the tube 1 via a duct 13 in the jig 4 and the tube 15 before the welding operation, during which the cover 6 is pressed down on to tube 1, the bevelled periphery of which becomes flattened. Finally, the tube 15, which accommodates a lead 9 from the element 8, is squeezed inwards and sealingly welded by electrodes 16, 17. The bevelling of the periphery of tube 1 may be omitted.
