Abstract
930,596. Grinding wheels. NORTON GRINDING WHEEL CO. Ltd. May 1, 1962 [June 19, 1961], No. 22067/61. Class 60. A grinding wheel, particularly for removing burrs from machined gears, has a continuous thread on the periphery thereof and a flame sprayed coating of an abrasive metal oxide such as alumina on said thread which forms the grinding surface. A metal disc, e.g. of mild steel, is provided with a continuous thread form of the desired pitch on the periphery. The container of the thread form is machined to allow for a coating of flame-sprayed oxide to be applied to the desired thickness, e.g. 0.020 inch. Preferably the periphery of the disc is preliminarily roughened by shot or abrasive blasting. A preliminary layer of flame-sprayed metal, e.g. nickel chrome or mild steel, may be applied to improve the mechanical adhesive of the oxide layer. The abrasive coating may be treated with a cold setting or thermosetting synthetic resin in order to increase the resistance to wear of the wheel. Epoxy resin may be used. Specification 745,257 is referred to.
