Abstract
930,373. Degassing steel. YAWATA IRON & STEEL CO. Ltd. Sept. 28, 1959 [Oct. 3, 1958], No. 32936/59. Class 72. A method of vacuum degassing steel comprises raising the molten steel from a ladle into a vacuum vessel in which it is subjected to a rotary magnetic field to rotate the metal, the steel being raised through a central pipe dipping into the ladle and being returned to the ladle through a pipe at the side of the vessel. As shown, a vacuum vessel 6 has a central pipe 3 through which steel from a ladle 1 is raised into the vessel and a pipe 4 at the side of the vessel through which the degassed steel is returned to the ladle. A coil 8 surrounding the vessel sets up a rotary magnetic field which produces a rotary movement of the steel in the vessel and at the same time induces sufficient heat in the metal to prevent cooling thereof.
