Abstract

930,310. Tyre building formers. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Nov. 24, 1959 [Dec. 20, 1958], No. 41196/58. Class 144 (1). A tyre building former has a building surface formed by a number of separate arcuate segments 4 each having an inner peripheral dovetail section rib 5 which, when the segments are assembled end to end, forms an annular rib which is gripped between angle-section peripheral flanges 8, 9 of a pair of radial discs 7, one of the radial discs 7 having radially spaced sealing rings 11 co-operating with the other disc 7 to define an annular space between the discs which may be exhausted of air via an outlet 13 in one of the discs so that the discs are forced together by atmospheric pressure. As shown, the discs are slidably mounted on a shaft 16 having an abutment 17 for one disc, and a circumferential groove 18 receiving a circlip 19 to abut and retain the other disc when in the clamping position. This permits release of the vacuum between the discs during tyre building. The ribs 5 each have a transverse dovetail section slot 6 therein to receive a complementary locating block 10 carried by the flange 8 of one of the discs 7.
