Abstract

930,110. Aerating water with ozone. THE CITY OF DUSSELDORF REPRESENTED BY THE OBERSTADTDIRECTOR OF DUSSELDORF. Jan. 15, 1960 [Jan. 16, 1959], No. 1571/60. Class 14 (1). [Also in Group I] In a process for treating water with ozone, a small portion of the water is separated and intimately mixed with ozone, the mixture then being injected under pressure into the remaining larger portion of water before the water is led to the bottom of a contact vessel from which it flows continuously through an outlet at the top of the vessel, so that substantially all the ozone is dissolved before the water leaves the contact vessel. The main part of the water is supplied to the contact vessel 40 through a feed pipe 41, pumps 42 and an inverted U-shaped inlet pipe 43 the downstream arm 44 of which is deeply immersed in the vessel 40. The remaining small portion of the water, previously separated from the main feed pipe 41, is supplied through a pressure pipe 45 to a water jet pump 47 connected to an ozone-air mixture supply pipe 46, the pump 47 supplying an intimate mixture of ozone and water under pressure to a water ring compressor 48. The compressor 48 causes further mixing and feeds the mixture through pipe 49 to the upstream arm 50 of the pipe 43 in counter-current to the rest of the water from the feed pipe 41. The resulting turbulence and the subsequent long path of flow promotes thorough mixing of the ozone-water mixture with the rest of the water. The water from the arm 44 is led to the bottom of the contact vessel 40 from which it flows through an outlet 52 controlled by a valve 53 into a storage tank 54. The pump 47 is provided with a needle valve so that the amount of ozone mixed with the water can be controlled.
