Abstract

<PICT:0929781/III/1> <PICT:0929781/III/2> In a fluidized bed apparatus, laminar deflectors are arranged in the bed to deflect rising gas from the central part of the bed toward the outer parts of the bed to avoid the formation of 'bubbles' the deflectors being arranged in pairs the members of which diverge upwardly and said pairs lying vertically one above another. Gas may flow back into the centre of the bed between said pairs of deflectors or means may be provided to supply additional gas between said pairs of deflectors. As shown in Fig. 1, porous or perforated tubes 19 are provided to supply additional gas, the deflectors are all the same size and heat exchanger tubes 21 are also provided. In Fig. 2, the deflectors 24 are reduced in size toward the upper part of the apparatus to assist uniform fluidization. The Provisional Specification is not restricted to the use of deflectors to remove gas from the central part of the bed, and refers to formation of 'bubbles' in the outer parts of the bed. The half-angle at which the deflectors diverge is preferably 17 1/2 -22 1/2 degrees, and as an alternative to the reduction of size referred to above, the pairs of boards (deflectors) nearer the upper part of the bed may be more widely spaced. In one embodiment a deep, narrow bed is provided and the members of the successive pairs of boards are spaced further apart toward the upper part of the apparatus. The apparatus can be applied to the treatment of textile webs, and also to wood fibres and the heat treatment of glass.
