929,433. Air heating stoves. TYNESIDE FOUNDRY & ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Nov. 5, 1959 [Nov. 5, 1958], No. 35580/58. Class 64 (1). In an air heater for drying vegetable substances, air heated in a jacket 39 surrounding a combustion chamber 10 is mixed in a chamber 37 with combustion gases which pass through an apertured baffle plate 33 before entering the chamber 37. The baffle plate may be one in which the total aperture area is adjustable, or one of a plurality of interchangeable plates, each with a different total aperture area than the others whereby the combustion gas-air ratio discharged from the mixing chamber through an outlet 36 can be predetermined. Access to the baffle plate for adjustment or replacement in the apparatus shown is gained by removing a cover 44. The combustion chamber has a cylindrical wall lined with refractory blocks 11 and end walls covered with refractory material 20, 25. One end wall is formed with a conical passage 21 diverging from the burner 19 and with secondary air inlet ports 22. The other end wall is provided with passages 26 of circular or kidneyshaped cross-section through which the combustion gases flow to the baffle 33 and thence into the mixing chamber 27. Thermostatic means (not shown) are provided for controlling the quantity of fuel consumed and for stopping the flow of fuel in the event of flame failure.
