Abstract

Particles having a metal core partly or wholly encased in a shell of a polymer of an aliphatic 1-olefin monomer are made by treating a metal, a mixture of metals, or an alloy, except an alkali metal, with the components of a multicomponent catalyst system comprising a compound of a metal of Group IVb, Vb, VIb, VIIb, or VIII of the Periodic Table, and an organometallic compound of a metal of Group Ia, IIa, IIb, or IIIa of the Periodic Table and before the catalyst components have fully reacted, bringing the catalyst-treated particles into contact with the olefin until a shell of polymer has formed on the particles. The Periodic Table referred to is the Periodic Chart of Elements from Fundamental Chemistry, 2nd edition, by H. G. Deming. The treatment of the metal particles with the catalyst components is preferably effected in the presence of an inert organic diluent. The metal particles may be in the form of short filaments or fibres. Exemplified metals are lead, boron, mercury, electrolytic copper powder, gold, magnesium, aluminium powder, finely divided sponge iron, nickel powder, iron-silicon alloy powder, stainless steel alloy powder, manganese powder, short copper filaments, and chromium powder. The 1-olefin may be ethylene, propylene, butene1, butadiene, or isoprene. An extensive list of catalyst components is given in the Specification, and those exemplified are titanium tetrachloride and triethylaluminium, titanium tetrachloride and methyl magnesium bromide, and zirconium tetrachloride and methyl magnesium bromide. The coated particles may be moulded, cast or extruded into sheets or discs, used as paint additives, employed as magnetic compositions, or used, when the metal is lead, as a shielding material for gamma radiations or as a shielding material for beta radiation when the metal is aluminium. The coated particles may also be employed in powder metallurgy by igniting the polymer coating so that the metal sinters.
