Abstract
Alkyl-halogeno-silanes are prepared by reacting the appropriate alkyl halides with an iron-silicon-copper composition obtained by treating finely-divided ferro-silicon containing more than 50% of iron with an aqueous solution of a cupric salt which is preferably acidified. Preferred compositions are those containing 20% or more of silicon and at least 5% of copper. The alkyl halides may be either saturated or unsaturated. Exemplified compositions are 43% iron, 26% silicon, 31% copper, and 46,3% iron, 26,7% silicon, 27% copper; the preparation of methyl chlorosilane and trimethyl chlorosilane is described.ALSO:Finely-divided ferro-silicon containing more than 50% of iron is treated with an aqueous solution of a cupric salt whereby the iron is partially replaced by copper to yield an iron-silicon-copper mass which is subsequently reacted with an alkyl halide to produce an alkyl-halogenosilane. The cupric salt solution is preferably acidified. Particular compositions exemplified are 43% Fe, 26% Si, 31% Cu and 46.3% Fe, 26.7% Si and 27% Cu.
