Abstract
928,975. Electrodes for electrolytic cells. NORTON CO. Feb. 9, 1962 [May 11, 1961], No. 5018/62. Class 41. [Also in Group XXII] In making a cathode for an electrolytic cell an alloy member comprising a major proportion of iron and minor proportions of nickel cobalt and manganese is interposed between a metal base and a tip of titanium diboride, zirconium diboride or titanium carbide with silvermanganese solder between the alloy member and the base and tip respectively, the assembly is heated in a protective atmosphere to melt the solder and the assembly is slowly cooled. In making a cathode used to reduce alumina to aluminium a tip 1, Fig. 2, of titanium diboride produced by powder metallurgy is placed in a cup 2 of a 29% nickel-17%-cobalt-0.2% manganese-iron alloy having substantially the same expansion coefficient as that of the tip with circular shims of solder e.g. 85% silver, 15% manganese between the tip and cup. Shims of the solder are also placed between the cup and an iron or steel base having a higher coefficient of expansion. The tip, cup and base are sand or shot blasted and cleaned and the solder is cleaned. The assembly is heated in a furnace containing nitrogen, argon hydrogen or helium to melt the solder 5 and is slowly cooled, part of the cooling taking place in an inert atmosphere. In a modification the base 7, Fig. 3, has a cupshaped end 8 into which the tip 9 is inserted with a plate 6 of the Ni-Co-Mn-Fe alloy between them and solder between the tip and plate and between the plate and base.
