Abstract

A hardenable composition comprises an ether product containing two epoxide groups and being one or more of the isomeric compounds of the formula: <FORM:0928449/IV(a)/1> together with one or more hardening agents therefor, preferably polybasic carboxylic acids and their anhydrides. Other suitable hardeners are amines or amides, guanidine and guanidine derivatives, dicyandiamide, aniline-formaldehyde resins, polymers of amino-styrenes, polyamides, isocyanates, isothiocyanates, polyhydric phenols, phenol-aldehyde resins, reaction products of aluminium alkoxides or phenoxides with tauto meric reacting compounds of the aceto-acetic ester type, Friedel-Crafts catalysts and phosphoric acid. Accelerators may be present such as tertiary amines, polyhydroxy compounds, alkali metal alkoxides or carboxylic acids. The mixtures may also contain a proportion of the above ether product in which the epoxide groups are completely or partially hydrolysed to hydroxyl groups, or other polyhydroxy compounds. Other epoxides such as mono- or polyglycidyl ethers of mono- or poly-alcohols, polyglycidyl esters of polycarboxylic acids, or aminopolyepoxides, may also be present. The hardenable compositions also contain fillers, plasticizers or colouring agents.
